What inspired Jose Rizal to write Noli Me Tangere?

Noli me Tangere translated to English as Touch Me Not (a literal translation of the Latin title) is widely regarded as the greatest Filipino novel, along with El Filibusterismo. Originally written in Spanish, it is now taught in Tagalog and English in schools. Rizal was inspired to write a novel about Philippine society after reading Uncle Tom's Cabin, which galvanized many white Americans to speak out against slavery.

The title is the Latin interpretation of an expression expressed by Jesus to Mary Magdalene after his revival, as indicated by the Book of John. Swiss scholar Maurice Zundel connected this second to the devotee Thomas, frequently called Questioning Thomas, contacting contact Jesus' injuries and being informed that "blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Through this statement, Jesus accentuates the significance of trusting in his restoration without unmistakable, actual confirmation.
